SOMOS: Supporting Opportunities for Mixed-Status Organization and Success is a student-led initiative dedicated to empowering first-generation Latine students and immigrant community members through advocacy, peer support, and culturally responsive services. Rooted in immigrant justice and community care, we work to dismantle barriers created by immigration status, financial hardship, and institutional exclusion while fostering belonging and opportunity.
At SOMOS, our heart is with the Latine community. We exist to uplift first-generation Latine students from mixed-citizenship status families and the undocumented community, extending our care to their loved ones. We recognize that systems of oppression, like racism and xenophobia, work together to impact whole families, not just individuals.
While our mission is grounded in serving the Latine community, we believe in solidarity and advocacy for all immigrant experiences. We open our hearts to all undocumented individuals and immigrant families regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, or religion.
SOMOS is based in San Francisco, a city with a legacy of immigrant resistance and sanctuary. In the 1980s, San Francisco became a central site of the Sanctuary Movement and offered refuge to Central Americans fleeing U.S. backed regimes and war. Today, the city is home to a diverse immigrant population.
We extended our support to the communities our students and clients come from, helping their families and loved ones access resources wherever they are.
We host on-campus events at the University of San Francisco to ensure undocumented and immigrant community members are not excluded from academic spaces. By creating spaces of belonging and connection, we bridge the gap between immigrant communities and higher education.
SOMOS exists to create lasting change in the lives of the students, families, and community members we serve. We confront the systemic exclusion that immigrants and their loved ones face by building pathways to stability, empowerment, and community care.
We support fellow students by helping them navigate campus resources, access essential services, and build meaningful community, while also offering direct support to families and community members through food and housing assistance, legal navigation, and ongoing peer support.
SOMOS believes change begins when immigrants and their stories are heard and supported. Through direct services, advocacy, and student-led organizing, we equip our communities with the knowledge, resources, and relationships needed to navigate oppressive systems and collectively mobilize.
